How We Got Here

Karen and Alan Schmidt have called Lake Norman home for more than 20 years, and that deep community connection is what led them to found Freshwater Design & Build. Together, they have created award-winning projects and established Freshwater Design & Build as Lake Norman’s go-to firm for clients who want design, construction, and furnishings handled by one trusted team. Karen leads design, and Alan leads construction.

They offer a fully integrated experience where clients don’t have to juggle separate builders and designers. Every project flows from concept to completion under one roof, right down to the final furnishings, many of which come straight from their own Freshwater Shoppe. It’s a true partnership, in business and in life, and it shows in the care and craftsmanship behind every home they touch.
